Cyrus Joseph and Sarah WORLEY JONES home is still a home 100 years later..

Cyrus and Sarah WORLEY JONES family home Logan, Utah about 1895.
Mary writes:
I just drove over to Center Street to see if I could find this house. It is still standing. The actual address is 280 West Center Street. It is just two houses West of the large Eccles mansion which is owned by the Needham family.... The house is on the South side of the street and looks virtually the same except a garage has been added to the East side (left side of the photo.)

The Cyrus Joseph Jones and Sarah Worley Jones home as seen in 2009. The garage to the left of the photo was added to the original house and an addition was made to the back of the home. (Photo by Mary B. Judy)

The upper window and chimney are on the original back wall of the Jones home. An L-shaped addition was added later to the house with a porch over the door.

There are two doors leading into two separate rooms.

A view of the Cyrus Jones home (left) next to the Nibley mansion (right). These two homes are on the south side of Center Street. The Nibley mansion is on the SW corner of 3rd West and Center Street, Logan, Utah.

Photo of the Ellen Ricks Nibley mansion in 2009 which is next door (West) to the Cyrus Joseph Jones house. Charles W. Nibley emigrated from Scotland as a convert of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He quickly climbed to a financial, political and religious stature. His estate was estimated to be in the millions. He became the Presiding Bishop of the LDS Church and the last six years of his life he traveled on church business with the church's president, Heber J. Grant. Early in 1945 a Foundation Organization was established to provide a home for the aged and indigent. From 1948 to 1953 care of the aged was given in the Nibley Building on Center Street. The home was later owned by Ray Somers.

Looking northwest across the street from the Cyrus Jones home to the intersection of 3rd West and Center Street where the Henry Worley home was suppose to be located.

The David Eccles mansion is located just two houses east of Cyrus Joseph Jones home in Logan, Utah. It is now owned by the Needham family. This is one of the homes that William Worley helped build. Built in 1907, the three story mansion contains twenty-four rooms, 11,000 square feet of floor area and is considered to be the largest home in Cache Valley. It was built for the second wife of David Eccles, Ellen Stoddard. David Eccles emigrated to Utah in 1863 with his family from Scotland . He became extremely successful with interests in sugar, lumber, coal, banks, etc.

Thank you Mary J. for the modern photos and copy.

He had taken sick on the third of October, 1885, with malaria fever. They arrived in Logan after traveling four days and nights over two thousand sixty miles, On October 19, 1887 he met with an accident while hauling lumber from Crowther‘s Saw Mill in Logan Canyon. He was never in very good health after this, so he worked at selling church books and was a deacon at the old tabernacle. He helped to plant many of the old trees that still stand. He died after three weeks illness in Logan, Utah, on June 21st in 1897. He was a faithful member of the L.D.S. Church, and was respected by all who knew him. Obituary notices are a good source of family history.

I was looking at this photo of my great grandmother Sarah Amy JONES HAWKES and her sisters.
Eva JONES LILLYWHILE is my brother in laws grandmother. Which makes my children and their first cousins also third cousins once remove. I don't know much about the other sisters so I Googled Clara JONES and her husband John Pearson SMITH. I found Obituary notices for two of Clara's children and the names of four more. I found them interesting and I enjoyed reading about cousins I had not known about.

Grand children of Cyrus Joseph JONES and Sarah WORLEY. My great grandmother's niece and nephew. And my daughter CR's first cousins 3 times removed.

Obituary:
Oceanside, CA: John Pearson Smith, 97, passed away on October 9, 2008 in Oceanside, California. John Pearson Smith was born to John Pearson Smith and Clara Jones Smith on November 15, 1910 in Logan, Utah in his grandmother’s home that is now known as The Cottage. He learned the printing trade very young and worked in his grandfather’s print shop, John P. Smith and Sons. John started playing the trombone at 10 years old. He played in the Logan City Municipal Band and school bands before attending Utah State. During that time he played at the Pantages Theater and for silent movies. He soon moved to Hollywood and played for the 20th Century Fox band and appeared in the movie, Alexander’s Ragtime Band. When he married and had children, he returned to the printing trade. He and his wife Thelma owned a print shop in Los Angeles. He was an avid genealogist, gardener and golfer. He also returned to music thirty years ago and was in three bands until he turned 95. He is survived by his wife Thelma and four children, Jay, Sue, Steve and Judy, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Kaye. His family has always enjoyed his music, loved his stories and appreciated the example he set of working hard. He always did things the right way, not the easy way. He always finished what he started, and when it came to being a father, he had more patience than his children thought was humanly possible. He always had a positive attitude and, at times, it seemed that he was so busy he kind of forgot to get old or slow down. He will be remembered for his legacy of seeking knowledge, his kindness, his dignity and his strong testimony of the gospel. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the Logan City Cemetery. A viewing will be held prior to services beginning at 10:00 AM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary.
