A DETACHMENT OF THE UNITED STATED SOLDIERS OF

THE MORMON BATTALION

IN THE MEXICAN WAR SPENT

 THE WINTER OF 1846-47 NEAR THIS SITE. 

WITH THEIR FAMILIES  AND MORMON

 IMMIGRANTS FROM MISSISSIPPI

 THEY FORMED A SETTLEMENT OF 275 PERSONS.

 THEY ERECTED A CHURCH AND ROWS OF

 DWELLINGS OF COTTONWOOD LOGS.

 HERE WERE BORN THE FIRST

 WHITE CHILDREN IN COLORADO.

The first wife of James ANDRUS was Manomas' older sister Laura Arrilla GIBSON ANDRUS.

NOTE: In 1857 George Washingion GIBSON married Ann Elizabeth NEWMAN GIBSON. Together they had six children.  Ann Elizabeth who married Charles Harvey BALLARD, George Andrew GIBSON who married Emily WOOD, Sarah Jane GIBSON who married John WOOD Jr., Mary Ardillacy GIBSON who married William ISOM, Joshua Newman GIBSON who died at age 10, James William GIBSON who married Florence Pearl CROSS. 

   Manomas was 98 years old when she passed away.
