Johns parents had come to Utah from England. He was born in Lehi moved to Virgin Utah as a child moved to Long Valley, Nevada, Duncan, Utah then back to Grafton Utah. He lived in Rose Valley, Nevada.  John with his brother George Henry moved to Pipe Springs Arizona to work at braking horses. Then moved back to Grafton. John ranched on Kolob Mountain summers (starting in 1900). The family built and lived in Hurricane, Utah (1906).

From Ether Wood (1889-1974) History: [In Grafton we lived in a two room frame house about three fourths of a block from the one room adobe schoolhouse and church.] My grandfather's house was across the street west.  His house is still standing in Grafton [as of 2016]. In 1911 Andrew moved my Fathers house and barn to Hurricane and lived in it until he died and his family moved to Salt lake City about 1932. ...[Just north from the rocky hill] was my fathers blacksmith shop. 

From Ether Wood History: The Expression "The river", meant Springdale, Rockville, Grafton, Duncan, and Virgin. My father had the first Grain binder on the river.  It took three horses to pull it.  It would cut the grain and tie it in bundles with twine.  The grain was never stacked in the field, it was hauled to town and stacked in round stacks.  My Father [John Wood Jr.] and Uncles, George Gibson, 'Nen' Wood and Will Isom [the Bishop and husband of my mothers sister] had the first threshing machine on the river also. They threshed all the grain on the river.  The Thresher had two parts. (1) the separator and (2) the horsepower [10 horses in 5 teams]....

During the early 1890's the men of Grafton donated their time and work to make a road up the Grafton Mountain, south of town.... This mountain road was so steep it really worked a team of horses to pull an empty wagon up and one of my fathers trips for wood on Gooseberry Mountain I went with him. When we arrived at the top of the mountain he stopped and made me get off and walk.  He had what he called a "shoe" he had made to put under the rear wheel and chained it to the rack side.  It slid down the mountain and he wouldn't have to brake very much. [This trip the "shoe" had been forgotten.] He hadn't gone far, [me following on foot] when the link which supported the brake bar to the rack side broke and turned him loose with no brake at all and the horses trying to out run the wagon made so much dust I couldn't see the road.  I groped along as fast as I could when I came to where the wood, including the rack and rear axle and wheels had gone over the rock wall on the lower side.  I looked among the scattered wood for my father but couldn't see him. When the dust cleared I could see him down the road. The ranch which holds the front and rear axles together had broken and the front axle pulled out and the horses continued on with the front axle. [The horses were going so fast when they came to the S turn they they not able to make the turn] and went straight on through the rocks.... It was a miracle that my father survived.

From Ether Wood History: In 1906 we moved to Hurricane. Although we lived in a tent with a board floor and walls for six years. We built a barn, stable and corral, fenced the lot and field, and worked on the canal.

John Wood Jr.

John Jr. help buitd the St. George Temple by hauling lumber by wagon. He and Sarah Jane Gibson were later married in the St. George Temple. 

John worked at several trades. He was in the hauling business using wagons with teams of  horses. He and his brother George Henry Wood "Nen" broke horses. "Nen" died from a horse falling on top of him. Like his father he was also a blacksmith and a farmer. John was an owner in the co-op Threshing Company.  John and his son John Andrew Wood helped build the Hurricane Canal. John was a rancher on Kolob Mountain. John served as counselor in the Grafton Bishopric 1887-1907. He served as a Justice of the Peace and a County Commissioner. 

From Ether Wood History: About the turn of the century my father bought a ranch on Kolob mountain from Moses Gibson. It was on big Creek about a mile up the valley from what is now Kolob reservoir. We lived there many years in the summer and dairyed, our milk cows were range cattle and were quite hard to break to milking. We would lasso them and snub them to the fence, quite often when we turned them loose we would have to go under or over the fence to keep from getting a horn in the seat of our pants.... My Father kept horses and cattle on the ranch from early spring until late fall.

and Ellen SMITH WOOD 1822 England -1899 Grafton, UT.

They had ten children: 

1- Sarah Ann WOOD WESTERN 1850 England - 1920 Deseret, UT. Sarah was the first of Samuel Winsborough WESTERN 1843-1938.  Sarah and Samuel had ten children.  Samuel also had a second family.

The WOOD Family 

John Wood was born on February 14, 1819 [Hurst, Ashton UnderLyne, Lancashire, England].  Ellen Smith was born in [Staleybridge, Dukinfield, Cheshire, England] on February 18, 1822. [They were married 6 Jan 1850 in Stockport, Cheshire, England.]  While in Chesterfield , England , they had two children, but  their second daughter , Eliza, died at very young age. [John worked as a coal miner.]

[They were baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in May of 1851.  Both their families were unhappy with there joining the restored gospel.]

They came to America and crossed the plains by ox team in 1853 [with the Cyrus H. Wheelock Wagon Train.  Ellen was pregnant and had a place to ride with little Sarah Ann.  While John had] cholera and had to walk most of the way.  Sometimes not catching up with the wagons until late at night.  During their Journey, they seldom had more than bread and water to eat.  While they were crossing the plains, Cyrus Nephi was born; he died at two months and was buried on the prairie.  As they went on their way, their hearts were burdened heavily to have to leave this little grave behind them.  They, along with many other Saints, were sorely tested as they came West.

Finally they reached Lehi, Utah, where they settled for eleven years.  Six children were born to them while there, but three of them died.

[One very cold winter John had no shoes.  The only way to get a pair was to send away.  When the shoes finally arrived they were too small and could not be worn.  The family had run out of fire wood.  John had a desperate need to find wood for cooking and heat.  He wrapped rags and burlap around his feet and went into the hills for wood.  His feet were frozen.  He thought the only way to thaw his feet out was to dig a hole in the earth and put his feet in.  But the frozen flesh dropped off, and from then on he limped.]

In 1862 they were called to settle in Dixie.  Eleven-year old Sarah Ann drove the oxen and John Drove the stock.  When they crossed the Black-Ridge in December, there were so many boulders and ruts in the road that John was constantly afraid that Sara Ann would be pulled under the animals’ hoofs any minute.

On December 21, Emily was born in a wagon Box in Virgin.  Soon Thereafter, the family moved to Duncan and then to Grafton.

They moved to Rose Valley, Nevada.  As recorded in their history:

Before leaving, Grandpa and other men went to Long Valley and planted grain.  While in Nevada they had cows and sold the butter and milk.  Because of their religion they came back to Grafton and Grandma said this was the last time she would move. 

They were anxious to get to Long Valley and get their grain cut because it was a long, slow process.  They had no more than got started when the president sent word that they were having Indian uprisings, and to come home for their own safety.  Since it was such a long distance they stayed a little longer to get a bigger load before starting for home.  When they got to the sands they had to double the teams to get through.  They were then attacked by thre Indians.  One man was shot in the shoulder, they fixed him as best they could, running a silk handkerchief through and tying a knot on both ends to stop the bleeding.  They went around by Zion Canyon, over Kolob, and into Virgin before they got any help.  The Man Lived, however; his name was Steven. (“History of the John Wood Family,” an unpublished family history in the possession of Keith Hall, Hurricane, Utah.)

John was a Wheel-Wright and did many things for people.  He worked in a blacksmith shop.  He made beautiful braided ropes and hackamores in his spare time.

Ellen was an excellent cook and housekeeper.  She was always cheerful and neat around their home.  How her grandchildren loved her bread and butter cookies, dumplings and puddings.  In later years, they especially enjoyed gathering around to enjoy her cooking and each others company.

Ellen died on May 7, 1898 [in Grafton, UT.  Some think she died of a broken heart after her son George Herny died when a horse he was braking fell on him.]  John lived to see the fulfilling of Southern Utah residents’ dream.  At the age of ninety-two, his daughter Emily Gibson moved him to Hurricane with her family.  [John‘s hand was crippled so he could not write and he was almost blind in old age.]  He died [in Hurricane, UT] on August 4, 1911.  [That was twelve years after Ellen had died.  John would often say “she will think I‘m too long coming.”]   Although he did not live to see how successful the new town would be, his posterity would.  And they would not only contribute to its development, but also honor his memory for the heritage he had given them.

The adobe home of John WOOD Sr. and Ellen SMITH at Grafton, Utah. Grafton is a Ghost Town near Zions National Park

Before I get too far away from Grafton. I want to list my grandparents that had a part in the founding, development, events and eventual end of Grafton.

Family founders, settlers and builders of Grafton, Utah

1856 Indian Mission, head quartered at Fort Harmony. Old Grafton 1859-1860 (1) Marcy Jane LUCAS WILLIAMS BARNEY and her second husband (B1) Henry Barney. Marcy's daughter Polly WILLIAMS was the wife of James George DAVIS son of Bishop William Reese DAVIES. 1859-1860 (2) William Reese DAVIES and (3) Rachel MORRIS DAVIES William Reese DAVIES was called to the Indian Mission in 1856. He was the presiding Elder over Fort Harmony which included Toquerville and the communities in the Virgin River Valley. The Davies were living in old Grafton seasonally because of William’s health. It is possible some of the DAVIE children were also in old Grafton. Henry Barney was a counselor to Bishop William R. DAVIES at Fort Harmony. Also Uncle John Calvin ENSIGN (brother of Martin Luther ENSIGN the great grandfather of Camilla SMITH - this links both my parents to Grafton) he was in Dixie from 1861 to 1863, moved to St. George in 1862, probably after the flood; returned to Salt Lake City; wife Emma Garn; they had four children: Emma Lavenia, Mary Priscilla, John Calvin, Jr., And Horace Daniel. Dixie Mission 1861 (Cotton Mission). Flood 1862 Grafton moved 1 ½ miles up Virgin River Valley. 1662 -1865 (4) John WOOD Born 1819 in England and 1877- 1911 (5) Ellen SMITH WOOD born 1822 in England. Ellen SMITH WOOD was buried in Grafton 1899. John WOOD died in Hurricane 1911. CHILDREN who lived in Grafton: (4/5a) Sarah Ann WOOD WESTERN Born 1850 in England. (1862- ) John WOOD Sr. had a Log home. (1882-1909) This home is occupied by son George Henry WOOD Sr. family. (1880- 1911) John WOOD Sr. new adobe home at new location. Emily and George GIBSON live in this home with widowed John WOOD Sr. until 1911. (2007) The adobe home is still standing in the ghost town of Grafton,Utah. From 1863- (7) George Washington GIBSON Born 1800 SC and second wife (8-B7) Ann Elizabeth NEWMAN GIBSON Born 1840 in England. Six children, one born in Big Cottonwood, Grafton, and Duncan’s Retreat. George Washington GIBSON was buried in Grafton 1871. Ann NEWMAN died in 1875 in SLC, UT. George seemed to be living both in Grafton and Duncan’s Retreat. CHILDREN who lived in Grafton: . (6/9d) Ether WOOD, born 1889 in Grafton (6/9c) Ivie WOOD, born 1891 in Grafton, married a Grafton boy Angus Franklin BALLARD. (6/9e) William Erwin WOOD, born 1893 in Grafton (6/9f) Claudius WOOD, born 1896 in Grafton (6/9g) Clarence WOOD, born 1899 in Grafton (6/9h)Josephine WOOD, child born and buried in Grafton (30 Oct 1902-4 Nov 1902). (1900-1909) John WOOD Jr. home was across the street from John WOOD Sr. home. This home and the barn were taken apart board by board by (10-6/9a) John Andrew WOOD and moved to Hurricane, UT. (10-6/9a) Andrew and (A10) Laura WOOD's family lived in that rebuilt home in Hurricane until abt 1933. Note: (A10) Laura Elizabeth PARKER WOOD wife of (10-6/9a) John Andrew WOOD was a great granddaughter of both (1) Marcy Jane LUCAS WILLIAMS BARNEY and the DAVIES' (2) William Reese DAVIES and (3) Rachel MORRIS DAVIES.
