1908 Home Builder

close up of Herbert Henry Hawkes builder
Herbert built his own home in Logan and also built a home for his oldest daughter when she married. That house was used by many of her siblings when they married.

Hyde Home at Hyde Park,UT

Herbert Hawkes was hired to build the home for the Charles Hyde family around 1908. Three generations of family lived in this home and it was loved by many many grandchildren! It featured a library, large bedrooms with huge walk-in closets, and two sleeping porches. It was built with a covered side porch, and big farm kitchen. There was a large kitchen sink with swinging seat attached and a builtin flour bin cabinet. From the front huge bedroom you could see the Logan Temple lite up on the hill! The home is no longer owned by the Hyde or Waite family. (Vickie Mather Prows)

"Herb and Amy Parents of the Whole Shebang"

5th child - Frank Jones HAWKES
spouse 1- Grace STAR d.9 Jan 1958
/
spouse 2- Minnie Ann NIELSON COX m.17 Jun 1959

[Herb and Amy Parents of the Whole Shebang]
(Written and sung for a family reunion - to the tune of “Davy Crockett” - by Frank and his wife Grace.)

Sarah Amy Jones was a very pretty girl,
Herbert Henry Hawkes thought that she was a pearl,
They fell in love in Logan Town,
And now their sons & daughters are the jewels of their Crown.
Herbert:- Herb and Amy, parents of the whole shebang.

First came Ella with her hair of gold,
And to hear her tell it she still ain’t very old.
Then came Kate, a cute brunette,
The scholar of the family and the teachers pet.
Ella: Kate and Ella first of the whole shebang.

Born in Pocatello was Herbert lad,
The first boy in the family so they named him for his Dad.
Then came Eva with her [smile] so sweet,
And exactly two years later the family I (Frank) did greet.
Herbert: Frank and Eva Three of the whole shebang.

Then came a lad that we laid to rest,
Joseph Jones, and He’d probably been the best.
Think of him often and let your children know.
That the sixth of the family was a boy named Joe.
Joseph: Jospeh Jones, sixth of the whole shebang.

Then came Ethel and she brought much joy.
Then came Lorin a tow-headed boy.
When these two were safely on shore
Everyone said there won’t be any more.
Ethel: Ethel and Lorin, winding up the whole shebang.

But the best of calculations can sometimes be
Wrong as the dickens in this land of the free
For seven years later when the kids were nearly raised
Along came Blayne and the the Saints be praised!
Blayne: Blayne J. Hawkes- Baby of the whole shebang.

Now this is quite a heritage for them first two
They had nine children before they were through,
Brought em all up Proper- to fear the Lord.
So lets all pull a little tighter on the family cord-- For
Herbert: Herb and Amy, Parents of the whole shebang.

Children at play - Some things never change.

H. H. HAWKES family photo of unknown children.
The boy on the left is very familiar. Lorin was born in Jan 1913, Blayne was born Apr 1920. Could this little boy be one of them? Maybe the front yard of the HAWKES home in Logan.

HAWKES - JONES

Married 1896 Logan UT
My mother Camilla told me her grandmother Amy HAWKES (1875-1952) had told her when Amy was a teen she and a friend would "run out of church and hide in the ditch so that no old men would see them and want to marry them." Amy wanted to marry a young man with no other wives.
First of nine babies Amy Ella HAWKES SMITH MONSON (1887-1971)
Nine children born to this family 4 girls and 5 boys. The 6th child Joseph Jones HAWKES (1907-1910) was drown in the irrigation ditch when he was 2 years old. Mother Amy (1875-1952) was pregnant with her ninth child Blayne Jones HAWKES (1920-2008) at the same time her oldest daughter Ella (1887-1971) was pregnant with her first child Amy SMITH (1920-1974).
Herb built their home at 352 W. 3rd S., Logan, Utah. Once int the late 1960's I rode to Logan with my Grandmother Ella and my mother Camilla, grandma was driving all over the road as she messed with the radio nobs. I ask her what she was doing and she said "trying to adjust the air conditioning." When we got to Logan she told me how she once drove her sick husband Ensign to Logan when they drove by his Smith family home he cried because someone had cut down all the trees. Then she drove into the drive of her parents home in Logan she knocked on the door and told the lady "my father built this house." The lady invited us in and showed us the house. Grandma said the large rug on the living room floor had belonged to her mother. I have been told by one of Amy's grandchildren that Amy had Herb build the kitchen sink low so that the children could do the dishes. My mother Camilla told me that her grandfather Herb would chin himself on one of the branches of the tree in front of the house when he was playing with his grandchildren.

I remember as a girl copying a family group sheet at my grandmother Ella's kitchen table. This was an assignment for my "Treasures of Truth" Mutual Improvement project. I was fascinated that all grandma's brothers had the same middle name. What a wonderful way to preserve a mother's maiden name.
