bff

These girls were "best friends for ever" at South High School 1943.  Three of them stayed close for the next 50 plus years.  Jean Marie and Camilla were in each other's weddings.  Jean Marie told me recently that she became a nurse because Camilla had become a nurse.  Marilyn and Camilla were 4th cousins their common grandparents were Isaac ENSIGN Rev. War Vet. (1756-1843) and Lydia NOBLE (1768-1851).  Their sons Samuel ENSIGN and Horace Datis ENSIGN were the great great grandfather's of Marilyn and Camilla.

Gospel Study Group was held monthly for almost 50 years. (pictured abt 1965) Wood's and Erickson's,   the group origianaly also included the Aird's,  The couples would take turns hosting the Sunday night Study Group once a month.  In the 1950's the children were included.  I remember making tents by hanging towels and blankets on the lower kitchen cupboard doors with the Erickson children while our parents were in the living room studying together.  Demlon spoke about the Study Group at Dee's funeral in 1987 and Delmon and Marilyn continued to get together with Camilla until her death in 1999.

Family Legends: Lady Godiva

Lady Godiva statue by Sir William Reid Dick unveiled 1949 in Broadgate, Coventry

Lady Godiva was the wife of Leofric, Earl of MerciaThey had one proved son Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia.  Lady Godiva's name occurs in charters and the Domesday survey, the spelling varies from Latinised to old English - Godiva, Godgifu or Godgyfu meant "gift of God."  Godiva was the daughter of Thorold Sherriff of Lincoln and Lady Edith.

It is believed she was a widow when Leofric married her. Both Leofric and Godiva were generous benefactors to religious houses. In 1043 Leofric founded and endowed a Benedictine monastery at Coventry on the site of a nunnery destroyed by the Danes in 1016. In the 1050s, her name is coupled with that of her husband on a grant of land to the monastery of St Mary, Worcester and the endowment of the minster of Stow St Mary, and many other endowments were given by Leofric and Godiva.
After Leofric's death in 1057, his widow lived on until sometime between the Norman Conquest of 1066 and 1086. She is mentioned in the Domesday survey as one of the few Anglo-Saxons and the only woman to remain a major landholder shortly after the conquest. (See Wikipedia)

The Legend
According to the popular story, Lady Godiva took pity on the people of Coventry, who were suffering grievously under her husband's oppressive taxation. Lady Godiva appealed again and again to her husband, who obstinately refused to remit the tolls. At last, weary of her entreaties, he said he would grant her request if she would strip naked and ride through the streets of the town. Lady Godiva took him at his word and, after issuing a proclamation that all persons should stay indoors and shut their windows, she rode through the town, clothed only in her long hair. Just one person in the town, a tailor ever afterwards known as Peeping Tom, disobeyed her proclamation. In the story, Tom bores a hole in his shutters so that he might see Godiva pass, and is struck blind.  In the end, Godiva's husband keeps his word and abolishes the onerous taxes. (See Wikipedia)

"El Cid" Christian Castilian knight Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar

One of the kids had to watch this movie for Spanish class and it turns out El Cid was her grandfather.
El Cid (1961) is a historical epic film, a romanticized story of the life of the Christian Castilian knight Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, called "El Cid" who in the 11th century fought the North African Almoravides and ultimately contributed to the unification of Spain.

SEE WIKIPEDIA:

Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (1043 – July 10, 1099), known as El Cid Campeador "The lord-master of military arts", was a Castiliann nobleman, military leader, and diplomat. Exiled from the court of the Spanish Emperor Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile, El Cid went on to command a Morrish force consisting of Muladis,  Berbers, Arabs and Malians, under Yusuf al-Mu'tamas ibn Hud, Moorish king of the northeast Al-Andalus city of Zaragoza, and his successor, Al-Mustein II.
After the Christian defeat at the Battle of Sagrajas in 1086, El Cid was recalled to service by Alfonso VI, and commanded a combined Christian and Moorish army, which he used to create his own fiefdom in the Moorish  Miditerranean coastal city of Valencia.
Rodrigo Díaz was educated in the royal court of Castile and became the alferez, the chief general, of Alfonso VI, and his most valuable asset in the fight against the Moors.
He was the subject of the oldest extant Spanish epic poem Cantar de Mio Cid.

Rodrigo Diaz De Vivar 'El Cid'and his wife Jimena Diaz were the parents of Cristina Rodriguez. Cristina and her husband Ramiro of Navarre Jimeno were the parents of our grandfather Garcia IV Jimeno King of Navarre.  Our relationship to 'El Cid' comes through two of Garcia's children.

SEE WIKIPEDIA:
Alfonso VI (before June, 1040 – June 29/July 1, 1109), nicknamed the Brave (El Bravo) or the Valiant, was King of León from 1065, King of Castile and de facto King of Galicia from 1072. After the conquest of Toledo he also self-proclaimedvictoriosissimo rege in Toleto, et in Hispania et Gallecia.[1] Much romance has gathered around his name.
Alfonso VI 'the Brave' : is our 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 34th. Grandfather more than 100 times - Related by both Kirt DeMar WOOD and Camilla SMITH.
Our relationship come through two of Alfonso's children. First - Teresa Princess of Castile daughter of Alfonso and Ximena Moniz, Teresa was the wife of Henry I of Burgundy, they were the parents of our grandfather Alphonso I Henriques, King Of Portugal.  Secend - Urraca, Queen of Castile and Leon daughter of Alfonso and Constance of Burgundy, Urraca was the wife of Raymond of Burgundy they were the parents of our grandfather Alphonso VII, King of Castile & Leon.
