Born to be King

I became curious about my relationship to Edward I King of England because three of his children are my grandparents. The fact we are all spiritual brothers and sisters as well as physical cousins is interesting. We have 15 grandchild relationships through four children of Edward I. Two daughters and a son by Eleanor and Edward I. One son by Marguerite and Edward I.

Edward I was a tall man for his age, hence the nickname "Longshanks". He was also temperamental and this, along with his height, made him an intimidating man and he often instilled fear in his contemporaries. Nevertheless, he held the respect of his subjects for the way in which he embodied the medieval ideal of kingship, both as a soldier, administrator and a man of faith.

Eleonor Castile Queen Consort of England

Eleanor of Castile (1241 – 28 November 1290) was the first queen consort of Edward I of England. Eleanor was born in Castile, Spain, daughter of Saint Ferdinand, King of Castile and Leon and his second wife, Joan, Countess of Ponthieu. Her Castilian name, Leonor, became Alienor or Alianor in England, and Eleanor in modern English. Edward I and Eleanor married at the monastery of Las Huelgas, Burgos on 1 November 1254 there marriage had been arranged by Henry III to secure England’s claim on the duchy of Gascony, in the south of Aquitaine the last possession of the Kings of England in France. Arranged royal marriages in the Middle Ages were not always happy, but available evidence indicates that Eleanor and Edward were devoted to each other. Edward is among the few medieval English kings not known to have conducted extramarital affairs or fathered children out of wedlock. The couple were rarely apart.

Died 28 November 1290 (aged 48–49) Harby, Nottinghamshire. Burial Westminster Abbey, London.

Joan of Acre Princes of England

Joan, or Joanna, of Acre as she is sometimes referred to, was born in the spring of 1272 in Syria, while her parents, King Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castille, were on the crusade. She was the only English princess to be born outside of her native land, in the city of Acre, where her name derives from.

Spouse of Princes Joan 1. Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Hertford, 3rd earl of Gloucester on April 30, 1290 at Westminster Abbey. They had 4 children before Gilbert's death in 1295.

2. Sir Ralph de Monthermer, 1st baron Monthermer, a knight in her household, they married in 1297 without her father's consent. Enraged at his daughter's lowly second marriage, Edward I had Monthermer thrown in prison. Joan begged for his release, and the king relented, giving Monthermer the title earl of Gloucester.

Joan of Acre died on 23 April 1307. The cause of her death remains unclear, though one popular theory is that she died during childbirth, a common cause of death at the time. However, historians have not confirmed this to be her cause of death.

Princes Elizabeth

Elizabeth of Rhuddlan (also Elizabeth Plantagenet; 7 August 1282 – 5 May 1316) was the eighth daughter of Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile. Of all of her siblings, she was closest to her younger brother Edward II of England, as they were only two years apart in age.

Born 7 August 1282(1282-08-07) Rhuddlan Castle, Denbighshire.

Spouse 1. John I, Count of Holland m. 1297; dec. 1299, no children. 2. Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford m. 1302; wid. 1316.

During Christmas 1315, Elizabeth, who was pregnant with her eleventh child, was visited by her sister-in-law Isabella of France. This was a great honour, but the stress of it may have caused unknown health problems that later contributed to Elizabeth's death in childbirth. On 5 May 1316 (aged 33) she went into labour, giving birth to her daughter Isabella. Both Elizabeth and her daughter Isabella died shortly after the birthing, and were buried together in Waltham Abbey, Essex

King Edward II

Edward II King of England Born 25 April 1284(1284-04-25) Caernarfon Castle, Gwynedd. He was the first English prince to hold the title Prince of Wales. Called Edward of Carnarvon, was King of England from 1307 until he was deposed in January 1327. He was the seventh Plantagenet king, in a line that began with the reign of Henry II. House of Plantagenet. Father Edward I Longshanks. Mother Eleanor of Castile.

Edward II was married on 25 January 1308, to Isabella of France in Boulogne, the daughter of King Philip IV of France, "Philip the Fair.” Isabella was sister to three French kings. While still an infant, Isabella had been promised in marriage by her father to King Edward II of England the intention was to resolve the conflicts between France and England over land in Gascony and claims to Anjou, Normandy and Aquitaine. On 25 February 1308 the pair were crowned in Westminster Abbey.

Edward sent his wife, Isabella, to negotiate peace terms between France and England. On 31 May 1325, Isabella agreed to a peace treaty, favouring France and requiring Edward to pay homage in France to her brother, King Charles; but Edward decided instead to send his son to pay homage. Isabella formed an alliance with Roger Mortimer in Paris and they plotted against Edward II this lead to the war and abdication of him as king of England.

Died 21 September 1327 (aged 43)? allegedly by murder at Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire.
Burial Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire.

Edward II is remembered for being the first monarch to establish colleges in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Three years after the death of his beloved first wife, Eleanor of Castile, at the age of 49 in 1290, Edward I was still grieving. But news got to him of the beauty of Blanche, daughter of the late King Philip III. Edward decided that he would marry Blanche at any cost and sent out emissaries to negotiate the marriage with her half-brother, King Philip IV. It was also much to Edward's benefit to make peace with France to free him to pursue his wars in Scotland. Philip agreed to give Blanche to Edward on the following conditions: - A truce was concluded between the two countries. - Edward gave up the province of Gascony. Edward agreed and sent his brother Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster, to fetch the new bride. Edward had been deceived, for Blanche was to be married to Rudolph I of Bohemia and eldest son of Albert I of Germany. Instead, Philip offered her younger sister Margaret, a young girl of 11, to marry Edward (then 55). Upon hearing this, Edward declared war on France, refusing to marry Margaret. After five years, a truce was agreed, under the terms of which Edward would marry Margaret, would regain the key city of Guienne, and receive £15,000 owed to Margaret.

Edward was then 60 years old. The wedding took place at Canterbury on 8 September 1299. Marguerite was never crowned, being the first uncrowned queen since the Conquest.[3]

She never remarried after Edward's death in 1307, despite being only 26 when widowed. She lived out the remainder of her life in Marlborough Castle, by this time a dower house, and used her immense dowry to relieve people's suffering. Her saying was, "when Edward died, all men died for me". She died just 10 years after her husband, 14 February 1318 at Marlborough Castle, Wiltshire. at the age of 36, and was buried at Greyfriar's Church, Greenwich.

Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent. He was born at Woodstock in Oxfordshire, the son of Edward I Longshanks, King of England and his second wife, Queen Marguerite. He was 62 years younger than his father, who died when Edmund of Woodstock was only seven. Reportedly, he enjoyed his father's favour.

Married to Margaret Wake, 3rd Baroness Wake of Liddell, daughter of John Wake, 1st Baron Wake of Liddell by Joan de Fiennes, sometime between October and December in 1325 at Blisworth in Northamptonshire.

He was sentenced to death by Sir Robert de Hauville for treason, having supported his half-brother, the deposed King Edward II, by order of the Regents the Earl of March and Queen Isabella, before the outer walls of Winchester Castle. It was said that he believed Edward II to be still alive and had conspired to rescue him from prison. Such was public hostility to the execution that "he had to wait five hours for an executioner, because nobody wanted to do it", until a convicted murderer offered to do the deed in exchange for a pardon.
He was buried on 31 March at the Church of the Dominican Friars in Winchester.
