Founder's Monument Hartford, Connecticut

THE FOUNDER'S MONUMENT HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT

The original, brownstone obelisk, listing the names of those who settled in Hartford before February of 1640, was erected in 1837 by The Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford. It stood in the Ancient Burying Ground, located to the rear of the First Congregational Church (also called "Center Church") at the corner of Main and Gold Streets in Hartford. The cemetery is also known as the "Old Cemetery" or "Center Cemetery". 

Over the years, the monument deteriorated severely, despite various conservation efforts, and the Ancient Burying Ground Association determined that it was impossible to restore it. A replacement monument, dedicated on August 6, 1986, was erected by The Society of the Descendants of The Founders of Hartford, to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the City. The monument was carved from beautiful, durable, pink Connecticut granite. 

While the new monument retains the size and proportions of the original, the Founders’ names are now listed in alphabetical order, including several names omitted from the 1837 monument. (http://josfamilyhistory.com/stories/founders-monument.htm)
