Three cousins signed the Declaration of Independence


Three of our cousins
John Hancock, Robert Treat Paine, Oliver Wolcott signed the Declaration of Independence.


Governor of Massachusetts John Hancock was the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

So here is a somewhat sad story...my Grandad told me that one of our ancestors who captained a ship during the Revolutionary War--Elijah Putnam (who is a real guy by the way-is he a captain? Read the rest of this story and judge for yourelf) had signed the Declaration of Independence. In my 8th Grade history class with Mrs. Lucero I gave a presentation about my family history. I proudly shared the facts about my early American forefathers and the Captain who had given his signature to that old piece of parchment that made this country what it is today. An enthusiastic listener in the class dug out a history book and opened it to the page where the Declaration was printed and cried out "his name isn't here!"...oh, Grandad, he was one for tellin' tales.
